Premature Graying of hair - Ayurvedic View

When a person's hair begins to turn gray before the age of 35, the condition is called premature graying of hair.

In ayurvedic terminology premature graying of hair is termed as palitya. Though the tridosha (vata, pita, and kapha) imbalance is responsible for hair related problems but pita dosha has found to be the main cause for it.

Excess of pitta dosha in the body is the major cause of premature graying. Pitta is increased by the excessive intake of caffeinated and alcoholic drinks, meats and by excessive smoking. Pitta is also aggravated by eating too much of fried, greasy, spicy, and acidic food. Overdoing all or even any one of them may be the cause of your gray hair.

According to ayurveda various causes of premature graying of hair can be:
1.    Inadequate nutrition (deficiency of vitamin B, iron, copper and iodine in daily diet)

2.    Hereditary.

3.    Stress

4.    Unhealthy scalp

5.    Scalp which is not hygienically maintained.

6.    Using harsh shampoo, soaps and other hair styling accessories.
Any one of the above mentioned causes can have a strong and a lasting affect on our hair if proper and immediate steps to cure it are not taken.
Ayurveda suggests various solutions to the problem. They are as discussed below:
1.    One should have a diet which is having adequate quantity of vitamins, minerals and other nutrients.
2.    As far as possible one should stay away from all mental worries and stress. One should try and stay happy in all possible situations and find the solutions to our problems with a positive attitude. We can also meditate and practice yoga to stay calm and stress free.
3.    Should try and avoid use of chemical shampoos and blow dryers if possible as these weakens the roots of our hair and harm them in longer run.
4.    Should oil hair with herbal oils as often as possible.
